Holy Cow!

Now, I really really love the imagery of this one, almost as much as "The Last Supper" promo for Battlestar Galactica I used in my LJ header. Before anyone jumps in to analyze what this meant for where season 6 is heading, I want to point out that whoever made the artwork most likely had no idea either. Remember how much we analyzed "The Last Supper" to death back in the day? Turned out it was just a cool image to entice the fandom. So I think this most likely is the same too.

But, but that holy circle behind Dean's head? *faintssssssssssssssss*
Nov. 4th, 2010 03:46 am (UTC)
Oh yeah, that's a not so subtle halo. ;-)

But then we also know Dean isn't a real Angel. And Lucifer didn't escape the cage. So I take this imagery as metaphorical at most.

Remember that taste in art quiz you pointed me to just today? The one that revealed I very much like Renaissance art? How cool is it we get this promo art today?! The blocky red color that takes the center of the picture, the halo, the snake, and the fresco like background all reminds me a Renaissance painting!
Nov. 4th, 2010 04:04 am (UTC)
I think this is a very good promo pic if not the best. So artistic and like you said, like a Renaissance piece of art. :D

Oh, and it's also definitely metaphorical with the halo symbolizing good and a snake for evil. Though why Sam is seen as evil is still beyond me. :)
Nov. 4th, 2010 04:20 am (UTC)
Like I said, I don't think this suggests S6 Sam is evil. It's just a cool imagery. If you think back, from the very beginning of season 2, they skirted around the idea Sam may turn "evil". So this is nothing new here. I still think the writers of SPN had nothing to do with making this promotional artwork. Whoever made this probably know as much as we do about where season 6 will lead. ;-)

So you think they're probably just messing with us too, huh?
Well, it's working perfectly! Good god <3
Either way, it's a gorgeous promo. Never seen anything like it for SPN.

I can't stop staring at Dean though, FFFFF~
*passes out*

Oh yeah. I really doubt the people who made the promo art had seen the rest of the scripts of season 6. *g*

But I agree with you they did a tremendous job of putting out provocative artwork that will bound to generate talks among the fans. After all, that's what promo pictures should be about IMHO.

Hee. I'm a Dean!girl too, and naturally my concentration would be on him. Yet, it's not a secret nor a debatable topic on how pretty he is. It's a given!

ETA: Sorry I kept messing up here. I meant to say water_fowl182's comment down below offers interesting interpretations on this artwork if you are interested. *g*

Yeah, probably. SPN knows to keep its big secrets to itself until necessary anyway P:

Indeed! Perfect for feeding our curiosity ♥

So pretty~

That's quite alright! I'm looking at her responses right now. Very interesting. Thanks for the heads up!

I forgot to add something to my previous post - I would edit it if I could, sorry.

Anyway, another idea I got recently when looking at these pictures, specifically the one with all three with the hole in the ground. Do you think those light things could be souls escaping from Hell? It might have something to do with Sam's soul too.
Nov. 4th, 2010 06:56 am (UTC)
The image is... mmm... overwhelming, indeed, for lack of a better word and certainly appears to be making some front and center symbolic statements, but might I second the opinion, it doesn't necessarily transcribe the idea Sam's downright evil as is.
The way the Serpent circles him is really reminiscent of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the original sin imagery. Maybe we are to believe Sam is/has been/will be tempted by 'the serpent' (Lucifer, most likely, but not necessarily - could as well turn out the temptation of 'omniscience' or 'omnipower', or something along those abstract lines).
Or, maybe, judging from the sheer 'geometry' of this image - Sam *is* the tree of knowledge, harboring 'the serpent' and it's Dean who's gonna be tempted. Well, at least we do know Dean *is* after figuring out (i.e. 'knowing') what's up with Sam, be it good or evil (does it make Dean - Eve? *snickers*). Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.
Nov. 4th, 2010 06:35 pm (UTC)
Hee. I really love your interpretations here. When I first laid my eyes upon this image, my immediate thought was who's tempting who?

Since the entire SPN storyline has Sam being courted by the dark side one way or another, it's very easy to imaging Sam is the one being tempted by the serpent here. But that particular story has been literally done and over with, so...

And since Sam is more of a "Thinker" type (not to mention he has such a tall physique), associating him to the Tree of Knowledge is pretty brilliant, I think. I really like the idea that Dean is being tempted. I'm very much on board with Dean being the metaphorical Eve (does it make him the offspring of Helo and Sharon? *g*). I also would very much like to think they wouldn't stop short in giving the original sinner a halo. ;)

'Hee. I really love your interpretations here.'

Thanks! :)

I've tried to speculate in the last episode reaction post that Dean's love for his brother might be put to a test (by God???) for some reason, as a possible route for this character to take this season. Not the 'save-Sammy-or-go-down-trying' kind of test, though (that scenario indeed had been overdone through the span of the show and on all the previous occasions Dean's determination as to the possibility of steering Sam back towards the light remained more or less intact). But what if Dean is being subjected to the 'your brother is not the person you've always believed him to be - how would that make you feel about him? would you still love him?' kind of test? And could the positive answer to the latter be perceived as tantamount to giving in to temptation on Dean's part?
Then again, there's always that wayward chance Sam *is* the walking/talking/breathing Lucifer's Trap (no spoilers, just a wild idea of mine), as of his 'ressurection' - which could turn Dean's subsequent quest to salvage his brother's 'humanity' into unlocking the Beast again. If done consciously, that too could pass for Dean's surrendering to temptation (to get his brother back), in a way.

'does it make him the offspring of Helo and Sharon?'

Hoooo-boy! Don't get me started on *that* one! ;)))

Part II of my initial response
Pardon me I didn't have time to properly responding your earlier post here. I had to cut it short because it was time to pick up my son who was having a half day at school today. Anyway, we are sitting at a cafe restaurant having lunch, and while waiting for our food, I typed up more what I intended to say. But then I saw you are quick to respond with a very interesting POV which I'd very much like to ponder but don't have time at the moment. You really don't need my long story here, I just want to let you know that I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts here, and I'll properly respond to that later on. Here's what I typed before our food arrived:

ETA: I love it when you "overthink". Seriously that's the fun of looking at promo pictures. After all, there is only so much one can say while dwelling on how good looking the actors or actresses are. While I don't think the artists who put together these shots have more inkling than us on the actual plot of the season, they are certainly talented enough to produce provocative artwork! Just look at how the snake coiled around Sam's arm - I love how they added the shadow at the side of the arm to make it look like the snake tightens around the flesh (see original Sam pic here. And the original Dean pic is here if you are interested).

'I just want to let you know that I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts here'

Well you're really making me blush in all the humbleness worth here! Thank you! :)

'Seriously that's the fun of looking at promo pictures.'

I can't but agree on this one. One of the more compelling things about the 'fodder art', that accompanies a show (or a book, for that matter) discourse, to my mind, is that those pieces are viable texts, so to say, open to interpretation in their own right, regardless of the author's original intent, or lack thereof. Just like in this case, for instance, or the 'Last Supper' one, I believe, you've mentioned earlier, within BSG promo framework back in the day.
A picture's worth a thousand words, as they say, and it transcribes a certain message worth looking more closely for, on occasion, be it intentionally or by default.

VERY interesting train of thoughts here, dear. I've enjoyed reading your speculations very much, thank you for sharing. This would be REALLY neat if it turned out this way. Wow. I've said it before a few times, and I'll say it again, I REALLY think this season has SO much potential, especially with ideas like this. Want. more. Supernatural. now. *passes out*

'VERY interesting train of thoughts here, dear. I've enjoyed reading your speculations very much, thank you for sharing.'

It's a pleasure! :)

'I REALLY think this season has SO much potential, especially with ideas like this.'

Oh, how I *wish* that be true and they don't shy away from acting on that potential.
There're still paths for the plot to unfold, especially in regard to Sam and WTF is going on with him, that I'm quite apprehensive of. Namely the probability of him turning out to be Lucifer per se, Michael or God, or anything/one else decidedly 'non-Sam', for it won't just be a do-over of the previous season, but a rather tacky pass for all of his sinister demeanor we've witnessed so far through the season, as well as for all the hurt, torment and indecision, inflicted upon Dean so far. Sam panning out *not* Sam would cheapen the Dean-Sam drama for me, and I do like me some true-to-heart angsty Dean-Sam with as little otherworldliness thrown into the mix as possible. Then again, it's just me.
The other option of Sam's 'true colors' dilemma resolution I'm rather wary of too, is for him to have come back a soulless biomachine of a mam, Darth Vader style. Though the lesser of the possible plot-development 'evils' in my book, it's still somewhat of a gimmick to do away with the repercussions of his choices and actions so far. I can only hope, be it the case: a) Dean features prominently in the quest to retreat Sam's soul (preferably, is crucially instrumental to getting it back) and gets *praised* for it, dammit! b) the show's narrative doesn't resort to the 'explored' realms of Heaven and Hell as Sam's soul possible whereabouts, but paves the space 'within' (his psyche, mind, heart) as a place to search for his soul or 'restore' it from scratch (the latter preferably being a Dean-heavy process as well).

I should, probably, wind up my ramblings as is. :)
Sorry, if this turned out too lengthy.
Nov. 8th, 2010 09:54 pm (UTC)
First of all, sorry it took me so long to get back to you!

And don't worry if you think you're rambling...I loved reading your opinions! I also hope they take us somewhere new with Sam. The storyline and the fans really need a change from what we've seen in the past.
Nov. 9th, 2010 07:13 am (UTC)
'First of all, sorry it took me so long to get back to you!'

That's okay. Nothing to worry about whatsoever :)

Since I really-really-really didn't look forward to Sam turning out Lucifer's or anybody else's 'meatsuit' this time around, I do think they're doing a fairly decent job plot- and characterization-wise so far. At least, Sam's lack of soul still provides veritable enough grounds to consider him 'Sam' enough (since his mind, memory, experience, expertize are intact) in order to set up plausible framework for inter-brotherly conflict and abundant angst.
For Sam is all about rational priorities now. For instance, he made infiltrating the vamps' nest a priority, as opposed to his brother's life/safety. It was a conscious *choice*, which could've been executed in Dean's favor, but wasn't. Sam's soullessness could've been factored in there, but it as well could've been not. And Dean is now stuck with the person, brother or not, who *will* go on making choices akin to that. I just wonder how long Dean will last before, possibly, snapping. And I do dearly hope Dean's proximity will eventually rub off and Sam relearns to arrange his priorities around human-centric issues again, even before they fetch his soul back.

omg.Right? Amazing shots. These beg to be singned I think:) Hugs and love all the way to you.

Amazing artwork indeed! I have a confession to make: I know there are fans who's feeling blah about the new season. But I've been enjoying it so much so far! I hope it keeps up, and it just might beat the rest if the seasons to be my favorite!

*hugs and kisses*

I just saw this on another site...I agree, it is reminiscent of the BSG one, but I'm also with you in that I don't think it means much more than to try to entice people to watch the show.

Have a good day!
